Ingredients:
2 pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
5-6 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Prepare the pie crusts: If using store-bought crusts, follow the instructions on the package. If making your own, roll out one of the pie crusts and line a 9-inch pie dish. Set aside the second crust for the top.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices. Place the apple slices in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Sprinkle this mixture over the apple slices and toss them gently until all the slices are coated.
Add the lemon juice to the apple mixture and mix well.
Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust in the pie dish. Spread the cubes of butter evenly over the apples.
Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. You can create a lattice pattern or simply cover the pie completely and cut a few slits on the top for ventilation. Crimp the edges to seal the pie.
Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle sugar on top for a golden, crunchy crust.
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drippings, and then transfer it to the preheated oven.
Bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. If the edges of the crust start to darken too quickly, you can cover them with foil.
Once done, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before serving. This will allow the filling to set.
Serve warm or at room temperature, and optionally, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Enjoy your homemade apple pie!
